After securing degrees in Journalism and English at UGA, Dan helped start a catering business in his college town and a school of Sustainable Agriculture on St. Croix, USVI. He came home to the family farm in 2009 and launched Deep Grass Graziers, a direct market beef and seedstock operation focused on regionally adapted cattle with reproductive longevity. Dan serves on the executive committees of NATGLC, AFGC, and SSARE. He is the former president of the Georgia Forage and Grassland Council.
