Description

The Louisiana Small Scale Agriculture Coalition was formed in 2022 to ad-hoc serve as food systems support for the state’s LFPA roll-out. Through collaboration, trials, and tribulation, the network stuck together but stopped participation in Louisiana's LFPA. Over the last two years, the coalition has built a network of relationships, like a mycelium, throughout Louisiana, to support small-scale farmers. It now has a robust grantmaking program, a statewide staff position, and a shared body of state-wide work, much of it focusing on the climate crisis all while balancing diverse organizational interests and serving a state full of farmers who don’t get the federal or state-level support they deserve. Needless to say, it hasn't been easy! This panel of coalition members will share their experience with other Southern state non-profits facing similar challenges while providing tips for developing relationships that reflect nature, increase strength & resiliency, and require discomfort and bravery to resist a scarcity mindset. Highlight Project: Shreveport Green (SG) discusses how our North Louisiana nonprofit has evolved over the last 34 years to meet the needs of the community while creating programs that mirror biodiversity at every step of development. By maintaining a farmer-led organization that values the intrinsic nature of symbiotic relationships, each program uses a natural template to bring environmental justice to the city. SG is an LSSAC member and will discuss how they balance their distinct programs and deep collaboration.
