In this engaging presentation, Bonita D. Clemons, MPH, founder of FarmaSIS, will explore the transformative power of farming for Black women and communities. Founded in 2016, FarmaSIS is a pioneering all-Black, all-female, all-organic farming collective committed to fostering solidarity among Black women, improving health outcomes, and promoting economic empowerment.
Drawing on her extensive background in public health, nutrition, business, and economics, Bonita will share her journey of reconnecting Black women and youth with their agricultural heritage. Attendees will learn about the impact of organic farming on physical wellness, mental health, and community development. This hands-on program not only teaches participants the art of growing organic produce but also inspires them to launch their own gardening projects and share their newfound skills within their communities. Best of all, they get to feast on the "fruits and vegetables" of their labor.
Through her passion for sustainable agriculture and community solidarity, Bonita will demonstrate how "getting dirty" through farming can lead to empowerment, self-sufficiency, and the creation of healthier, more vibrant Black communities.
